Mute someone in a WhatsApp group: how to silence one member

WhatsApp only mutes the whole group, never a single person. Learn how to mute someone in a WhatsApp group with Becca and when it beats removing them.

Muting someone in a WhatsApp group is one of the most common requests from admins, and the honest answer is that the app does not do it. In the middle of a heated argument, what you want is to quiet one person for a while without kicking them out.

Here is what WhatsApp really offers, how Becca fills that gap and when it makes sense to mute instead of remove.

What WhatsApp lets you silence

Two things look like muting, and neither one silences a single person:

  • Muting the group notifications: it only applies to your own phone. The group keeps talking and so does the person.
  • Closing the group (Group settings, Send messages, Only admins): it silences everyone, including people who have nothing to do with the fight.

Beyond that, you are left deleting messages one by one as an admin or removing the member. The first ties you to your phone; the second is too heavy for a hot-headed day.

Muting with Becca

With Becca in the group (as an admin), !mutar @member puts the person on the muted list: every message they send is deleted until someone unmutes them. They stay in the group and can read everything, but whatever they write does not stay. The commands that go with it:

  • !mutar @member: silences the person.
  • !unmute @member (or !desmutar): frees the person.
  • !mutados: shows who is muted right now.
  • !desmutartodos: frees everyone at once, handy after a night of chaos.

Three cautions: Becca needs to be a group admin to be able to delete the messages; the mute applies to the person, not to a conversation, and it stays in effect until you free them, even if they only write again the next day; and admins and anyone on !autorizar are not affected, because the protections ignore both.

When to mute instead of remove

Removing is final and tends to leave resentment. Muting is a brake you can release whenever you want. Muting makes sense when:

  • The argument is heated and two members need a few minutes to cool down.
  • Someone crossed the line but deserves a temporary timeout, not an expulsion.
  • The person matters to the group (a customer, a relative, a coworker) and you only want to stop the behavior.
  • You need to contain spam while you check what happened.

For scammers, spammers and repeat offenders the answer is different: !ban removes them, and !addlistanegra makes Becca remove the person right away if they try to come back.

Monitors and automatic muting

You do not have to mute alone. With !addmonitor @member, the person becomes a monitor: a helper who can use !mutar, !unmute, !advertir, !ban and other moderation commands without being a group admin, but never against an admin. !monitores lists the team and !rmmonitor removes someone.

A good setup is two monitors who are active at different hours than you: they cover the late night and the weekend, and you only step in to decide the hard cases.

And there is the automatic option. Protections like !antiflood, !antilink and !antipalavrao have a Delete & Mute option: Becca deletes the message and puts the person on the muted list without you touching anything. Whoever sent a burst of messages stays quiet until an admin looks at the case, and the name shows up in !mutados.

When the fight is everywhere, close the group

If five people are arguing at once, muting them one by one is a lot of work. Use !fechargp: only admins can talk until you send !abrirgp. Say in one sentence why you closed it and reopen after a few minutes.

If the mess always happens at the same time, !fechargphora 22:00 closes the group every day at that hour and !abrirgphora 08:00 reopens it the next morning.

Leave a record with !advertir

Muting solves the moment but keeps no history. Combine it with !advertir @member: the person goes quiet and the warning is on record. On the third, removal is automatic, and !advertidos lists who has warnings. That way the group sees there is a standard and you do not become the villain of the story.

If the mistake was an accident, !desadvertir takes one warning back. Choosing well what to punish and what to forgive is what makes moderation look fair to outsiders and gives members the confidence to take part without fear.

Tip: Muting has no timer: the member stays quiet until someone frees them. At the end of the day, check !mutados to see if anyone was forgotten.

Next step

The next time an argument heats up, do not rush to delete messages: mute, let it cool and release. To have that at hand, add Becca to the group for R$ 15 per group per month, no lock-in, paid by Pix or card, and promote one or two trusted monitors. Good moderation is knowing how to quiet one person without silencing the whole group.
