Inactive members in a WhatsApp group: how to see who never talks
WhatsApp does not show who never talks in your group. Learn how to find inactive members, warn them fairly and clean up without causing drama.
Inactive members in a WhatsApp group are the quiet problem of almost every group that has grown: the participant count goes up, but only a handful of people actually talk. Over time the group looks full and behaves like an empty one.
Finding out who does not talk is harder than it sounds, because the app does not give you that data. This guide shows how to see who never talks in your group, how to clean up without drama and how Becca does the counting for you.
Why clean up inactive members
Removing inactive members is not persecution, it is maintenance. A lean group is a group that talks, and the reasons are very practical.
- Space: WhatsApp limits how many participants a group can have, and a spot taken by someone who never talks is a spot that does not go to someone who wants to take part
- Real metrics: with 500 members and 30 active ones, you cannot tell whether the topic is interesting or the group is just bloated
- Reach: an important announcement gets lost when a good part of the group muted everything and never opens it
- Mood: a group that looks empty discourages exactly the people who usually talk
What WhatsApp shows and what it does not
The app shows the participant list and who the admins are, and that is it. There is no message count per person, no ranking and no filter for people who never spoke. Last seen, when it appears, tells you the person used WhatsApp, not that they took part in your group.
What is left is the manual way: scrolling through the history and writing down who shows up. In a real group that does not work, because messages vanish in the scroll and the participant list runs to hundreds of names. This is where an automatic counter makes a difference.
How Becca counts activity
Becca counts the messages and commands of each member since the day she joined the group. Every message sent and every command used adds to that person's total. A person's record only starts with their first message or command: whoever has never written anything has no record.
This has an important consequence: the count is not retroactive. If Becca joined yesterday, almost everyone will look inactive. Wait a few weeks before judging who disappears, long enough for the group to show its real rhythm.
Commands to see who does not talk
- !inativos: lists people with a record who add up to 4 or fewer messages and commands together, in other words, people who barely talk
- !atividade @member: shows the messages, commands and total of one person. If the answer is that there is no activity information, the person has never written since Becca joined
- !rankativo: shows the 5 most active members of the group
- !atividades: lists the activity of all members (admins only)
Use !rankativo to find out who keeps the conversation going and !inativos to look at the other end. To find who has never written, compare the group participants with the !atividades list: anyone in the group who does not appear there has no record. Before removing anyone, remember that the inactive one is sometimes just someone who joined a few days ago.
Warn first, set a deadline, then remove
Cleanup works best when nobody is caught by surprise. Send a notice to everyone with !hidetag, which notifies the whole group without filling the screen with names, and give a deadline of a few days. A simple template: Everyone, on Friday we are cleaning up the group. Anyone who has barely taken part will be removed. Chat with us until then to stay here! ๐ Remember that the cutoff is 4 or fewer: anyone who sends just a hello will still show up on the list.
Once the deadline passes, run !inativos one more time and, if the list makes sense, use !banghosts. Becca needs to be an admin of the group. She tells you how many members she will remove, removes them one by one every 2 seconds and skips the admins. If you change your mind halfway, send 0 in the group and she stops. Heads up: !banghosts removes only the people who appear in !inativos. Anyone who has never written has no record and is left out, so you remove those people by hand with !ban.
After the cleanup, !limparatv resets the activity count and starts a new period. Use it only when you want to start from zero, and do not run !banghosts in the first days afterward: with a freshly reset count, almost everyone will have 4 or fewer.
Tip: If people you know take part show up on the !inativos list, the count is still too short: wait a few more weeks before removing anyone.
The numbers in the dashboard, no commands needed
In the Becca dashboard, the Reports tab shows, for each group, the messages, the commands used, the members and the list of who talks the most. The table per group has the Members and Have written columns: the difference between them gives an idea of how many people have not sent anything yet. The numbers are cumulative since Becca joined the group, so the same rule applies: wait a few weeks. It is the calmest way to look at the group and decide whether a cleanup is really worth it.
Next step
If Becca is already in your group, open the dashboard, see who talks the most and run !inativos to get an idea of the size of the problem. If she is not there yet, add her: it costs R$ 15 per month per group, with no lock-in. Let the count run for a few weeks, warn the group, set the deadline and do the cleanup with the list in hand.
