Block swear words in a WhatsApp group: ready-made or custom list

Learn how to block swear words in a WhatsApp group with a ready-made or custom list, which punishment to pick and how to warn people with a bit of humor.

Blocking swear words in a WhatsApp group sounds picky until the day an insult turns into a fight, the calmer members leave and the group loses the vibe you spent months building. Policing it by hand means reading everything, all the time.

WhatsApp has no word filter, so the answer is automation. Here is how Becca's two lists work, what each one is for and how to pick the right punishment without turning the group into a witch hunt.

What WhatsApp allows (and what it does not)

Natively, WhatsApp blocks no word at all. As an admin you can delete a message for everyone, remove the person or close the group to admins only (Group settings, Send messages, Only admins). It is all manual, and always after everyone has already read the insult.

What works in a big group is a filter that deletes on the spot, before the conversation heats up. That is what Becca's protections do, with two list options.

Ready-made list: !antipalavrao

!antipalavrao comes with a list of swear words in the group's language (set it with !idioma). You turn the command on, pick the punishment level in the menu and you are done: nothing to register. It is the fastest path for anyone who just wants to keep the group clean.

Custom list: !antipalavras

!antipalavras uses a list you build. Each word goes in with !addpalavra (for example, !addpalavra ugly), !palavras shows what is registered, !rmpalavra removes one and !rmpalavras empties the whole list. Both protections can run at the same time: the ready-made one covers the basics and yours covers what is specific to your group.

One detail that saves headaches: Becca ignores uppercase and accents, but it matches the whole word. If you register jerk, the plural jerks is not caught. Register the variations that matter.

What else the custom list is for

It does not have to hold only swear words. A few uses that make sense:

  • Competitor names: in a sales or customer group, it stops someone from using the space to recommend the rival.
  • A recurring offensive nickname: the one that always ends in a fight with the same person.
  • Scam terms: words that only show up in fraudulent messages, like the name of a fake giveaway or of a platform that is circulating through groups.
  • Off-limits topics: series spoilers in a fan group, or the rival team's name in a fan club group, if that is the rule.

Be careful with words that are too common: blocking pix in a sales group would delete legitimate conversation. Prefer terms that almost never appear in normal messages.

Which punishment to pick

When you turn the protection on, a menu shows the options: Disable, Only Delete, Delete & Remove, Delete & Warn and Delete & Mute. Every active option deletes the message. What changes is what happens to the person:

  • Only Delete: the message disappears and nothing else.
  • Delete & Warn: adds a warning, and on the third the person is removed.
  • Delete & Mute: puts the person on the muted list, and Becca deletes everything they send until !unmute.
  • Delete & Remove: takes the person out of the group right away.

Start with Only Delete or Delete & Warn. Swear words slip out in anger or in jest, and removing on the first offense draws complaints and makes the group afraid to talk. With Delete & Warn, the person gets two chances and the record stays visible in !advertidos. Raise the level only if the group does not learn.

Protections ignore admins and anyone on the !autorizar list. If you want to give a free pass to a guest or an important customer without making them admin, !autorizar @member does it, and !desautorizar @member takes the pass back.

Warn the group with humor

Deleting in silence leaves the member confused about what happened. With !msganti you set the message Becca sends when the protection acts, as text or media. The format is the protection name, a vertical bar and the text: !msganti antibadword | your text for the ready-made list, or antiwords instead of antibadword for the custom list. To remove the message, use !rmmsganti.

In practice
๐Ÿงผ Oops, that language went too far and the message was deleted. We argue here without lowering the bar. Repeat offenses can earn a warning.

Tip: Admins are ignored by the protections, so the test has to come from another number. Ask a friend who is not an admin to send a word from the list and check the reaction.

Next step

Turn on !antipalavrao today in Only Delete or Delete & Warn mode, send a message telling the group and, after a week, see if a custom list is worth building. Becca does it around the clock for R$ 15 per group per month, no lock-in, paid by Pix or card. A polite group is not born ready: it is maintained, and it is much easier when nobody has to be the bad guy.
