How to transcribe WhatsApp voice messages to text
A 5-minute voice note during a meeting? See how to transcribe WhatsApp voice messages with the native feature and how to automate it in the group.
Transcribing WhatsApp voice messages has become a basic need: every group has someone who sends five-minute voice notes, and listening is not always an option, in a meeting, on the bus, with a kid sleeping next to you. Turning speech into text gives you back your time and your peace.
There are two paths: the app's native feature and automatic transcription by a bot inside the group. Here is how to use both.
WhatsApp's native transcription
In recent versions, WhatsApp transcribes voice messages on the device itself: tap and hold the audio and choose Transcribe. If it does not show up, enable it under Settings, Chats, Voice message transcripts and download your language pack. Processing happens on the phone, so the first transcription may take a few seconds while the pack loads.
Limits of the native feature
- Each person needs to enable it on their own phone, in the right language
- Unavailable on older devices and older versions of the app
- The transcript stays visible only to you, it does not help the rest of the group
- Quality drops with long audio, background noise or heavy slang
For personal use and short voice notes, the native feature does the job. The limit shows up in groups: transcribing on your own phone does nothing for the other 80 people still forced to listen to the whole five minutes. That is where shared transcription comes in.
Automatic transcription right in the group
The second path solves it for everyone at once: with Becca in the group, just reply to any voice note with !transcrever and the full text appears in the chat in seconds, visible to all. It works on any phone, because the bot does the processing, not your device. In practice, it is the most used of Becca's AI commands, and that makes sense: it gives time back to the whole group at once.
From text to wherever you need
With the audio in text form, a range of options opens up: use !traduzir to turn the message into another language, !gpt to summarize the content with GPT-4, or copy the text to document a group decision. The reverse path exists too: !falar turns text into audio. In work groups, this pair becomes automatic meeting minutes: the agreement stops living in the memory of whoever listened and starts existing in writing.
Tip: Chain commands in sequence: !transcrever on the voice note and !gpt asking for a bullet-point summary. A five-minute audio becomes three objective lines.
Next steps
Enable native transcription on your phone today. And if your group lives on voice notes, add Becca and introduce !transcrever to the crowd: after the first week, nobody stays hostage to long audio out of obligation.
